    Ely City

    Ely city is a cathedral town in Cambridgeshire, England, fourteen miles north-north-east of Cambridge and concerning eighty miles by road from London. Etheldreda supported associate abbey at Ely in AD 673; the abbey was destroyed in 870 by Danish invaders and was remodeled by Ethelwold, Bishop of Winchester, in 970. Construction of the cathedral was started in 1083 by the primary Norman bishop, Simeon. Sacrist, Alan of Walsingham's polygon, designed over Ely's area crossing between 1322 and 1328, is that the "greatest individual accomplishment of discipline genius at Ely Cathedral" per discipline scholarly person Nikolaus Pevsner.
