Introduction to the Sundarbans: World’s Largest Mangrove Forest

The Sundarbans, located in the southwestern part of Bangladesh, is the world’s largest mangrove forest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spanning thousands of square kilometers across Khulna, Satkhira, and Bagerhat districts, it is a unique ecosystem of rivers, tidal waterways, and dense forests. This natural wonder is home to the Royal Bengal Tiger, numerous bird species, crocodiles, spotted deer, and diverse mangrove plants.

Location:

This UNESCO World Heritage Site lies at the delta of the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna rivers, covering thousands of square kilometers of tidal rivers, canals, and dense mangrove forests. A small portion also extends into West Bengal, India, making it a transboundary ecosystem.
