What is Westminster Abbey
What is Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey is one of the most historic and important religious buildings in the United Kingdom. It is a large Gothic abbey church with over a thousand years of history. The Abbey has been the coronation church of British monarchs since 1066 — every coronation since then has taken place there.
It is also the final resting place of many significant figures in British history: kings and queens, writers, scientists, poets, statesmen and other “great Britons.” The Abbey houses royal tombs, memorials to historic figures, and many sites of architectural and historical interest (chapels, the “Poets’ Corner,” the nave, cloisters, and more).
In short — visiting Westminster Abbey lets you explore more than a millennium of British history, culture, royalty, and architectural heritage.
Where it is Located
Westminster Abbey is located in central London, in the district of Westminster. Its official address is Dean’s Yard, London SW1P 3PA.
The Abbey is accessible by public transport: the closest London Underground (“Tube”) stations are Westminster (on Jubilee, Circle & District lines) and St. James’s Park (Circle & District lines), both within a short walking distance.
Opening Times
Because Westminster Abbey remains a working church, opening times for visitors vary somewhat. As a general guide:
- Monday–Friday: 9:30 am to 3:30 pm (last entry)
- Saturday: 9:00 am to 3:00 pm (last entry)
- Sunday: Closed to tourists — the Abbey is open for worship and religious services only.
Because it is a “living” church, certain services or special events may result in closure or restricted access to some areas. It’s recommended to check the Abbey’s official site for updates before visiting.
Ticket Price (General Admission)
As of 1 October 2025, the standard entry prices for visitors are:
